FIRST MORAL COURAGE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED
Posted June 3, 2008
On Tuesday evening, May 6, 2008, the first $25,000 Moral Courage Scholarship was awarded in Waxahachie, Texas, along with two secondary scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each. The seventeen remaining scholarship finalists were each awarded an "honorarium" scholarship in the amount of $100. The scholarships were presented by Gary Bassett, Chairman of the Board of Directors for The Moral Courage Foundation. Other representatives of the Foundation were also on hand for the ceremony, along with local dignitaries and the families of the twenty finalists.
Paul O'Rear, Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Foundation, told all twenty finalists, "We applaud you young people for your commitment to moral excellence and integrity. We encourage you to continue living by those principles. We are very proud of each of you, and we are here tonight to honor you."
A proclamation sponsored by Texas State Representative Jim Pitts was presented, proclaiming the week of May 5-11 "Moral Courage Week" in Ellis County, Texas, and congratulating all twenty scholarship finalists by name. A similar proclamation was presented by a representative of the Ellis County Commissioners Court, and an official copy of the proclamation was presented to each finalist.
Dean Kilmer, Senior Advisor to The Moral Courage Foundation and author of the book, Igniting the Moral Courage of America, spoke of the high moral caliber of all twenty finalists, and mentioned the difficulty faced by the Selection Committee in narrowing the field of twenty finalists to one primary scholarship recipient and two secondary recipients.
"This is what it's all about," said Roy Orr, Vice Chairman of the Foundation's Board of Directors. "It's not about being a good athlete or even the top student. It's about being a good, moral young person. That's what we are promoting with this scholarship. That's what this whole thing is all about." |
