Roy Orr
2009 Recipient
Roy Orr Moral Courage Award
Roy Orr is somewhat of a legend in North Texas and throughout the country for his many years of public service. He served as a Dallas County Commissioner for over a decade, accepted appointments from two United States Presidents and four Texas Governors, and has been actively involved with the National Association of Counties for years, including serving as that organization’s President.
Throughout his life - in politics, in business, and as a family man - Roy Orr has lived by a simple principle that is fundamental to who he is and what he believes: “always keep your word”. Politicians at every level of government know that Roy Orr is a man of honesty and integrity. His advice to parents is, “Don’t lie to your kids. If you tell them you’re going to do something, do it!”
Mr. Orr serves as an elder in his church and is often looked to for spiritual guidance. He is recognized by all who know him as a man who is straightforward and who lives by the biblical principles he professes. He has been actively involved in the Moral Courage Foundation from the start, and has had a tremendous positive influence in the Foundation’s direction.
In recognition of his commitment to honesty and integrity, the Moral Courage Foundation established the Roy Orr Moral Courage Award in 2009 to honor adults who live by the same biblical principles as the young people to whom we award scholarships. At the 2009 Moral Courage Awards Ceremony, the Foundation surprised Mr. Orr by announcing the establishment of the Roy Orr Moral Courage Award and naming him as its first recipient.
